One star fruit basket ingredient, the juicy orange, is familiar to almost everybody – and most people know it contains vitamin C – but few people know about one of its hidden health superstar ingredients: HESPERIDIN.
Found in the pith, which is the white fleshy part that lies between the sections of the orange and between the orange and the peel, and also in the orange peel itself, hesperidin is truly a superstar nutrient. 1) CANCER: In tests, hesperidin reduced the spread and growth of human breast cancer and prostate cancer cells, according to a 2010 study reported at About.com. For more scientific detail, see the study “Hesperidin suppressed proliferations of both Human breast cancer and androgen-dependent prostate cancer cells.”
2)BLOOD PRESSURE: A study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition on 24 overweight men aged 50-65 found that orange juice helps to reduce diastolic blood pressure. The study authors believe that hesperidin may be the active ingredient causing the beneficial change.

3) OSTEOPOROSIS: A 2003 study found that hesperidin may help prevent postmenopausal osteoporosis. As About.com reports, “In tests on mice, researchers discovered that a hesperidin-rich diet helped inhibit bone loss in animals whose ovaries had been removed.”
4) HEMORRHOIDS: Hesperidin has been linked in a study to the alleviation of symptoms from hemorrhoids. A 1994 study found that people who took hesperidin combined with another antioxidant compound found in citrus fruits showed a significant improvement in their hemorrhoid symptoms.
5) VARICOSE VEINS: Oranges contain hesperidin, which a study has found may help people with varicose veins, ankle swelling and nighttime leg cramping linked to chronic venous insufficiency, a condition in which the veins fail to efficiently return blood from the legs to the heart.
